In a medium bowl, combine ground beef, water, salt, pepper and bread crumbs; mold mixture into 6 large patties.
Lightly coat olive oil in a large skillet with a tight-fitting lid over medium-high heat; add beef patties; brown on one side then turn and add sliced onions; brown patties lightly on the other side.
In a cup, blend the cornstarch into about 1/4 cup of the broth; add mixture to the skillet along with the remaining broth; stir well.
Reduce heat, cover and simmer for about 40 minutes.
